When school stops, the need doesn’t

For some children in the Sea to Sky region, school isn’t just a place for learning — it’s where they get regular, reliable meals.

But what happens when school is closed?

During school breaks, many local families struggle to fill the gap left by paused breakfast and lunch programs. That gap can be devastating, especially for children already living with food insecurity.

At the Pemberton Food Bank — operated by Sea to Sky Community Services (SSCS) — the need is clear. 44% of clients are under the age of 24. And across Canada, children represent 1 in 3 food bank users, despite making up less than 20% of the population.

Food Security Means Stability

To help meet this need, SSCS partnered with Food Banks Canada’s After the Bell  program this year. Together, we distributed 280 nutritious, child-friendly food packs to local kids during times when school was out, providing essential stability for children facing food insecurity.

Each pack was designed to be child-approved, healthy, and easy to enjoy at home — ensuring children had something to count on, even when school doors were closed.

A Healthier Future Starts with a Full Plate

Food insecurity doesn’t take a holiday.

Through partnerships, local programs, and the strength of our supporters, we’re working to build a community where every child is nourished, supported, and set up to thrive — in school and beyond.
