How an Early Learning Program (and a Strong Partnership) Is Giving Hundreds of Kids a Head Start in School — and in Life
When you ask a parent how it feels to send their child off to kindergarten, the answer often lands somewhere between pride and panic. For many families, the lead-up to that first day of school is filled with questions:
Are they ready? Will they make friends? Will they know what to do? Will I?
For families in the Sea to Sky Corridor, the answer to those questions is increasingly, yes, thanks to S.P.A.R.K.
S.P.A.R.K.: Supporting Parents Along the Road to Kindergarten
S.P.A.R.K. is a local, community program designed to help families nurture their children’s early learning and development from birth to age five. Run by Sea to Sky Community Services (SSCS), S.P.A.R.K. provides expert guidance, practical strategies, and access to early childhood professionals—so families feel confident in supporting their children’s growth, no matter where they live in the Corridor or what challenges they face.
The result? Stronger parent-child connections, greater confidence in parenting, and positive early experiences that benefit both children and communities alike.
“…I’m so grateful that this program exists. It really was something I relied on over the years. There was so much interesting information and ideas… I love having that as a tool instead of screentime.” — S.P.A.R.K. parent
A Community-Wide Commitment to Early Learning
Through a partnership with Sea to Sky School District 48, S.P.A.R.K. does more than just prepare kids to learn; it helps families feel truly welcomed by their local school communities.
This collaboration gives families opportunities to visit their child’s future school, making the school feel familiar, not frightening. And this familiarity is especially important for first-time parents, newcomers to the region, or families facing systemic barriers.
“I’m new to Squamish and so far I’m really impressed with the community services available for young children and families…especially in the face of childcare being such a challenge.” — local parent
More Than Books and Toys — It’s a Toolkit for Confidence
When a child is registered in S.P.A.R.K., families receive a bag of age-appropriate toys and learning materials to support play, exploration, and early development at home. The program also provides:
- Guidance on supporting cognitive, language, and emotional growth
- Ideas for play-based learning and everyday learning moments
- Practical tips on early literacy, emotional regulation, and fine motor skills
- Parenting support from trusted early years professionals
“The advice has really helped my child to develop. You mentioned counting every day doing everyday things, and my child can now count to ten by 16 months!” — S.P.A.R.K. parent
“I enjoy learning how we can use the materials to aid in our child’s development. It’s usually activities I never would have thought of.” — S.P.A.R.K. parent
With just a few minutes a day, these tools become powerful building blocks for a lifetime of learning.
Low Commitment, Big Impact
Parents repeatedly tell us how easy it is to participate in the S.P.A.R.K. program, and how much value it provides.
“I really enjoyed how low of a commitment it is for how much info I received!”
And they love the team behind the program.
“The staff was amazing and so very knowledgeable… I will miss the information and the new book each month!”
“We love S.P.A.R.K.! It’s the BEST program! Very well done and the team is amazing.”
798 Families Reached (And Growing)
In 2024 alone, 798 families accessed S.P.A.R.K. across the region from Britannia Beach to Tipella. Our waitlists are growing and so is the momentum thanks to the shared efforts of SSCS, School District 48, and local community partners. S.P.A.R.K helps nurture early learning — and families want more of it.
With additional funding support, we’ll be able to explore the demand for things like:
- Expanded spots
- More workshops on positive parenting and emotional development
- Longer sessions
- More books through the Imagination Library
Let’s Keep Lighting the Way
Whether a family is brand-new to parenting or sending their third child to school, S.P.A.R.K. meets them where they are with support, guidance, and community.
Through play, learning strategies, and daily connection, S.P.A.R.K. helps families feel confident in nurturing their child’s growth, curiosity, and well-being—no matter where they live.
Because when we invest in early learning, we’re investing in every child’s future.
