Building Belonging: How Community Inclusion Is Empowering Lives Across the Sea to Sky Region

Our Community Inclusion Program is built on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, connect, and feel valued. It supports adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities in building life skills, forming friendships, and taking part in everyday community life.

Whether it’s tug-of-war at the annual Community Living Sports Day or publishing a personal comic book through our Employment Services, our clients show what inclusion truly means.

More Than Programs: A Pathway to Connection

The Community Inclusion Program offers more than just structured activities. It provides one-on-one support, group learning, and access to meaningful community events. These experiences help participants build confidence and independence while strengthening their sense of connection.

“I feel like I belong when I walk into the [Centrepoint] building. People smile, I see babies, I see people I know and it makes me happy,” shares our client, Hannah.

Through a weekday cooking class or the much-loved Community Inclusion Potluck in October, we see how inclusion can transform everyday moments into powerful experiences of belonging.

A Culture of Respect and Growth

Shantel, another client, shares her personal motto:

“Treat people how you want to be treated. I treat others how I treat myself: with kindness.”

That value guides everything we do. Our staff support clients by helping them:

  • Build communication and social skills
  • Learn practical tasks like cooking or using transit
  • Find and keep meaningful employment
  • Gain confidence in social settings
  • Develop lasting friendships

These supports are designed to help clients grow, pursue personal goals, and feel empowered in their day-to-day lives.

Inclusion in Action: Stories of Impact

We’ve celebrated our clients at major events like Operation Trackshoes in Victoria, where the SSCS Eagles competed in swimming, track, and more. We’ve also shared quieter victories, such as taking a first gondola ride or visiting Harrison Hot Springs.

One standout moment was supporting Sarah Colpitts, who published her first comic book, Art and Jokes, with help from our Community Employment Services.

These experiences reflect what Community Inclusion is all about—giving people the space and support to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others in ways that matter.

Looking Ahead: Inclusion Every Day

While October is Community Inclusion Month, at SSCS we celebrate inclusion year-round. From daily programs to seasonal events, we remain committed to creating a place where everyone feels welcome.

We’re deeply grateful to our staff, volunteers, partners, and most of all, our clients. Your strength, humour, and kindness are the heart of this work.

Inclusion starts with all of us.
