Together Through an Extraordinary Year
2020/21 challenged our communities in ways few could have anticipated. Throughout the pandemic, Sea to Sky Community Services adapted how we delivered programs while responding to rapidly changing needs across the Corridor. We had 6,503 visits to SSCS services — more than 1,500 more than the previous year.
The impacts of the pandemic were felt across our programs. Demand increased for food security, child development and seniors’ supports, while staff found creative ways to keep people connected — moving programs online, adapting services and finding new ways to reach families when gathering in person wasn’t possible.
Food insecurity became particularly urgent. In just two months, the number of women accessing the Food Bank grew from 101 to 245, while the number of Indigenous people seeking support increased from 121 to 402. Community partners, businesses and donors rallied alongside SSCS to help meet that unprecedented need.
Even amid the immediate challenges, we continued looking ahead. Work progressed on Spirit Creek, which would bring more than 76 affordable homes and a permanent Foundry youth centre to Squamish. A traditional Skwxwú7mesh blessing of the land in February 2021 marked an important milestone for the project and the partnerships behind it.
